The project aims to generate scientific evidence and launch advocacy campaigns to raise awareness about the sustainability of food systems in Lombardy, by addressing both the demand side (with regard to university cafeterias) and the supply side, particularly in relation to milk and meat production.
Led by Essere Animali, in collaboration with Legambiente Lombardia and Terra!, the partnership co-developed the initiative as part of AgriECO 2.0, a program supported by Fondazione Cariplo to promote the ecological transition of agri-food systems.
As part of the project, EStà conducted the study “Intensive Livestock Farming in Lombardy: Impacts, Challenges, and Transition Pathways” with the aim of providing an overview of the livestock sector in Lombardy, highlighting the main socio-economic and environmental issues affecting the sector in the context of a just ecological transition. The study analyzed the system of intensive cattle and pig farming in Lombardy, highlighting its scale, evolutionary dynamics, and main environmental, climatic, and socio-economic impacts. Through the analysis of official data and interviews with experts and industry professionals, the study shows that Lombardy’s livestock sector is highly concentrated and oversized relative to the region’s ecological carrying capacity. The results highlight a growing contribution to greenhouse gas emissions, a particularly high nitrogen load, critical issues regarding animal welfare, and a strong dependence on imported feed, which make the system fragile and vulnerable, including from an economic standpoint. The study concludes by emphasizing the need for a structural transition toward agroecological livestock models that are more sustainable and consistent with environmental, climate, and social objectives.
The research report will be presented on March 31, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at Cascina Cuccagna.
